Product description

Used for a long time as a cheap and effective way to get rid of thrush in horses, or as a dye for staining, for example, wood, silk, wool, and cotton.

NOTE! Be aware that the agent is harmful if swallowed and can cause irritation to the skin and eyes, so ensure that the packaging is always well closed when not in use and that it is stored out of the reach of children.

The product is sensitive to moisture and may clump together; this does not affect the quality of the product. It will still dissolve in water.

Thrush

Using copper sulfate for thrush is a classic method, but it is important to handle it with caution. Copper sulfate is corrosive and toxic, so you must protect yourself, the environment, and the horse.

Here is a guide on how to mix and use it safely.

Safety precautions (Important!)

• Protective equipment: Always use gloves (preferably disposable nitrile gloves) and eye protection. Copper sulfate strongly irritates the skin and mucous membranes.

• Environment: Never pour excess solution directly into the ground or drain, as copper is highly toxic to aquatic organisms.

• Handling: Avoid inhaling the dust when weighing the granules.

Mixing instructions (Concentration)

There is no "standard" that all veterinarians agree on, but a common and effective mixture for fighting bacteria/fungus in the frog is a 5–10% solution.

Recipe for approx. 1 liter of liquid (approx. 5% strength):

1. Water: Take 1 liter of lukewarm water (it dissolves faster than in cold water).

2. Copper sulfate: Mix in 50 grams of copper sulfate granules.

3. Mixing: Stir with a plastic or wooden tool until all granules have completely dissolved.

If the thrush is very deep or difficult to treat, some may prefer a stronger solution (10%), which corresponds to 100 grams per 1 liter of water.

How to apply it:

1. Cleaning: This is the most important step! Use a hoof pick and a brush to remove all dirt, mud, and manure from the hoof crevices. The solution will not work if it does not reach the infected tissue.

2. Dry: Try to get the hoof as dry as possible.

3. Application:

   • Syringe: The easiest way is to use a clean plastic syringe (without a needle) to inject the solution deep into the hoof crevices or into cavities at the hoof wall (White Line Disease).

   • Cotton: If the thrush is deep, you can soak a piece of cotton (gauze) in the solution and gently press it into the crevice with a hoof pick or a blunt tool. Let it sit for a few hours (but ensure it is not pressed too tightly).

4. Repetition: Treat daily or every other day, depending on the severity of the thrush, until you see a clear improvement.

Important advice:

• Copper sulfate dries out: It is effective because it kills bacteria and "hardens" the soft tissue, but do not overuse it so that the hoof tissue becomes brittle and cracks.

• Why does the horse get thrush? Copper sulfate is only a symptom treatment. To get rid of the thrush permanently, you must look over the horse's environment (dry ground), hoof care (regular trimming), and possibly nutritional supplements (biotin/zinc/copper) if the frog is chronically poor.

• If it does not help: If you do not see improvement after a week of treatment, or if it bleeds/oozes a lot, you should contact a farrier or veterinarian. There may be deeper infections that require professional debridement.

A small tip: If you want a more workable consistency (that does not run off as easily), some mix the copper sulfate solution into a simple zinc ointment or tar, but be careful about "trapping" bacteria if the hoof is not absolutely clean.
