Description
Fire-rated and environmentally friendly sealant.
For fire-stopping structures required to meet fire safety standards in connections and expansion joints, as well as for smoke and gas sealing.
- Fire-rated
- For expansion joints
- Good indoor environment
- M1
Product description
One-component sealant for fire-rated connection joints in buildings, fire resistance rating up to EI 120.
The sealant is easy to apply by hand or with a pneumatic gun. The sealant's special consistency makes pressing and tooling simple. Upon reaction with moisture, the sealant cures into a highly elastic joint with good movement capability.
Type Approval Certificate
0047/07. Bostik Fire-Bond Silmax complies with EN 1366-4:2006, EN 1363-1:1999 and, where applicable, EN 1363-2:1999. The tests are reported in SP reports P602692 A and B. The results of the tests are shown in the table.
AREA OF APPLICATION
A fire-rated sealant for fire-stopping structures required to meet fire safety standards in connections and expansion joints, as well as for gas and smoke sealing.
WORK INSTRUCTIONS
A fire-stopping structure must always consist of non-combustible mineral wool as a backer rod, as well as sealant. The width of the mineral wool strips should be 70 mm and the thickness 30 mm, with an uncompressed density of at least 30 kg/m³.
If the joint is deeper than 70 mm, the mineral wool should be doubled over. For joint design, see table. *steel profile consisting of two square profiles with a height of 20 mm with intermediate insulation of 25 mm Promatect
Explanation: e.g., lightweight concrete/concrete lightweight concrete/concrete EI 120 means that the structure seals against leaking fire smoke (E) and insulates against heat (I) for 120 minutes.
Pre-treatment of joint surfaces.
All surfaces must be dry and free from grease and dust. Oil and grease residues, especially on metal, glass, etc., should be removed with alcohol or acetone. Mortar residues and cement laitance should be removed mechanically. High moisture content in concrete impairs adhesion. Weathered paint on metal and wood is unsuitable as a substrate.
Primer treatment.
Porous materials:
In cases where the joint and joint surfaces will be exposed to very high moisture levels, priming with, for example, Bostik Primer 5075 is recommended. For concrete in outdoor environments, priming is mandatory.
Non-porous materials:
Wipe the surface with Bostik Cleaner/Activator. For joint dimensioning, see the table above.
Application
Once the joint is cleaned and the mineral wool is installed, apply the sealant using a caulking gun. For dimensions, see the table. The best adhesion is achieved when the joint is well filled during application without air pockets, and the joint surface is then pressed down during tooling so that the material has full contact with the contact surfaces. Tool the joint immediately after application to ensure full contact and tightness against the joint sides. Tool the joint with a joint tool dipped in a mild soap solution. Too much soap can affect the time until the joint becomes tack-free. Ensure carefully that the soap solution does not get between the joint side and the sealant.
After about 40 minutes, a surface skin forms and the joint becomes tack-free. Full curing is achieved after 2-10 days depending on the thickness of the joint. The air humidity and temperature affect the curing process.
Cleaning
Remove all excess sealant from the side of the joint and from tools before it has cured. Cured sealant is removed mechanically.
Overpainting
Overpainting is not recommended as standard paint can promote potential fire spread.
Maintenance
If the joint surface is damaged but the adhesion is good, the damaged surface can be cut away and resealed. If the adhesion is affected, remove the sealant completely, clean and prepare the joint according to the instructions under the section Pre-treatment of joint surfaces,
