Which surfaces is Pigmented Hard Wax Oil suitable for?
The product is intended for indoor wooden surfaces subject to heavy wear – floors, stairs, countertops, and furniture. Used on bare wood surfaces.
How long does the treatment last?
With proper pre-treatment and application in two coats, the oil provides long-lasting protection. When the surface feels dry and rough, it can be easily renewed – sand with fine sandpaper, remove sanding dust, and apply a new layer.
What does breathable mean?
The hard wax oil penetrates the wood instead of forming a surface film, which allows the wood to "breathe" and regulate moisture naturally. It provides a more natural feel compared to lacquer.
How much do I need?
One liter covers approx. 10–15 m² when treated with two coats. For a room of 20 m², you will therefore need approx. 1.5–2 liters.
What temperature can I apply it in?
Apply at room temperature, at least +15°C and max 50% humidity for best results. Drying times are specified at 20°C and 50% humidity.
Do I need to prime?
No, no separate priming is needed. However, it is important that the surface is sanded to bare wood and that all sanding dust is removed before application.
Is the product environmentally friendly?
Herdins Hard Wax Oil is based on natural vegetable oils and waxes. Keep in mind that soaked rags and steel wool contain drying oils and must be handled with care – place them in water or burn them to avoid spontaneous combustion.
Can I treat it myself or do I need a painter?
You can definitely do it yourself with a brush, Herdins Paint & Stain Pad, or Herdins Snappy. Follow the pre-treatment and application instructions carefully to achieve a professional result.
Pre-treatment
Sand the surface to bare wood – start with coarse sandpaper and finish with approx. 180 grit. Always sand in the direction of the wood grain. Carefully remove all sanding dust before application.
Application
Stir the oil well before use – it should be at room temperature. Apply with a brush, Herdins Paint & Stain Pad, or Herdins Snappy in the direction of the wood grain. Spread evenly and thinly, and wipe off excess with a soft cloth immediately after application. Let the first coat dry for 4–7 hours. Lightly sand between coats with a white scouring pad or 240 sandpaper. Apply the second coat in the same way and let dry for 8–12 hours. The surface can be put into use after 2–4 days and is fully cured after 10–12 days.
NOTE! Soaked rags, waste, and steel wool contain drying oils and can spontaneously ignite. Place them in water or burn them immediately after use.
Clean brushes and tools first with white spirit, then with soap and water.
